About this event

Materials list

  1. Black pastel paper with a slightly rough surface. A few sheets measuring approximately 30x40cm. I suggest Canson Mi-Teintes Touch or AS Colourfix Original both available at Artery. Large sheets may be cut to size or in half, for example.

  2. Colourful pastels including at least primary and secondary colours.

  3. A photograph (on your phone, ipad, or printed out) of an landscape that interests you, for ideas of the kind of image and how to frame it look at artists Andre Derain or Per Adolfson (for interesting composition).

  4. A board to clip your pastel paper to while you’re working (together with clips).

  5. A desk easel if you would like to use one.

  6. A few images of your favourite Fauve paintings, try googling Vlaminck, Derain, and Matisse for example. Or your favourite Blue Rider paintings by Kandinsky or Jawlensky.

  7. Workable fixative if you use it (not essential).

Morning

Discuss the Fauve and Blue Rider art movements, chosen in this instance as a way to get started using non local colour.

Look at some images by the Fauves and Blue Riders. Talk about use of their use of colour.

Discuss some of my pastel landscapes and images they are based on.  Discuss the idea that we are not trying to make a faithful representation of the landscape but to imbue the landscape with feeling through the use of colour. The emphasis is on enjoyment, spontaneity and intuitive colour choices.

Demonstrate layering starting with harder pastels moving up to soft pastels.

Students work on a colourful landscape. If they are stuck for colour combinations or ideas, refer to their favourite image for ideas.

Afternoon

Students can continue with their landscape or start a second landscape.
