The Art Society of Tasmania was formed in 1884 and has a proud and active history. Many Australian artists of note such as Arthur Streeton, W.C. Piguenit, Blamire Young and Edith Holmes have exhibited with the Society.
The Society exhibits artworks by members and feature artists at their home base – the Lady Franklin Gallery, located in Ancanthe Park, Lenah Valley. First-time visitors are always surprised to find this little convict-built ‘temple’ surrounded by native bushland in one of Hobart’s inner suburbs. Visitors come (quite literally) from all over the world to visit this special place. They enjoy the constantly changing exhibitions and also like to find out more about the building and its association with Sir John and Lady Jane Franklin. The surrounding parkland also offers picturesque walks along the New Town Rivulet.
Exhibitions change monthly with every second month providing a chance for all exhibiting members to show their work in a themed exhibition. Exhibition openings are generally held on the first Friday evening of the month (always check on our calendar). This is a chance to meet the artists, hear inspiring speakers and to enjoy refreshments often to live music.
Exhibiting feature artists give free talks about their works on display generally on the 2nd Saturday of their exhibition. These artists might also provide demonstrations of their techniques or run workshops in conjunction with their exhibition. Our members are also invited to participate in regular exhibitions with other art societies on a regular basis.
Our members include calligraphers, ceramicists, textile artists, jewellery makers, painters, photographers and sculptors.
Members can also enjoy other special events throughout the year such as the annual ‘Glover Lover’s’ trip to Evandale to view the prestigious Glover Prize.
Workshops are an important part of the AST calendar of events. Everyone is welcome to apply for workshops, with members receiving a discount on the cost. Workshop presenters come from within the ranks of the Art Society membership and even from overseas. Special events for members, including artist talks, outings and product demonstrations are also organised on a regular basis. Keep up to date with workshop offerings and special member events via the website.
Every 2 months, members receive a copy of ‘The Gallery News’. This little magazine keeps everyone up-to-date with member’s news both big and small as well as photos and reports of what’s been happening throughout the time.
We welcome you to visit us at the Lady Franklin Gallery to see our current exhibition every Saturday and Sunday 10am - 4pm.
